Thorsten Joachims, professor in the departments of Computer Science and Information Science, has been selected as one of the inaugural members of the ACM SIGIR Academy (Association of Computing Machinery Special Interest Group on Information Retrieval). The academy was established to “honor and recognize individuals who have made significant, cumulative contributions to the development of the field of information retrieval (IR)." The honor underscores that "[i]nductees to the SIGIR Academy are the principal leaders in IR, whose efforts have shaped the discipline and/or industry through significant research, innovation, and/or service.”
At Cornell, Joachims currently serves on the executive committee for the Center for Data Science for Enterprise and Society, and has served a two-year term as Chair of the Department of Information Science. He joined Cornell in 2001 after finishing his Ph.D. under the direction of Katharina Morik in the AI-unit of the University of Dortmund. Working with his students and collaborators, his papers have won nine Best Paper Awards and four Test-of-Time Awards. Joachims is an ACM Fellow, AAAI Fellow, and Humboldt Fellow.
