With a $1.3M NSF grant, CS Prof Carla Gomes and first-year PhD student Brendan Rappazzo will be using artificial intelligence to help identify and eradicate wasting eelgrass disease. After developing a software application called Eelisa, they will use machine learning to train the computer to recognize eelgrass blade lesions and correctly identify them separate from other causes like cuts or heat stress.
